Evaristo Netensibe Muyinda, born on June 2, 1916, in Nabbale, Uganda, stands as a towering figure in preserving and innovating Buganda's rich musical traditions. He began his journey with the akadinda, a traditional xylophone, at a tender age of nine, amidst the vibrant cultural tapestry of Buganda. His adolescence saw him become an integral part of the Kabaka's musical ensemble in 1939 during Mutesa II's reign, where he was drawn into the intricate world of royal court music. Muyinda was instrumental in the Uganda Museum, opened in 1948, using his role to bridge Buganda's musical heritage to a global audience. By creating a practical notation system for amadinda and akadinda, he empowered the academic study of East African music. He founded the renowned Kiganda Orchestra, expanding the horizons of traditional music through a structured ensemble approach. His contributions include significant recordings featured in 'Traditional Music of the Baganda' and 'The King's Musicians', which preserve this vibrant cultural legacy for future generations. Muyinda's influence continues to resonate, with his handcrafted instruments housed in European museums, and his teachings preserved through his progeny, notably his daughter, Maria Frances Nannemba Muyinda. His lifetime dedication culminated in a cultural renaissance, cementing his role as a custodian of Ugandan music until his passing on October 11, 1993.
